The Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), also referred to as Apple Watch SE 2, is Apple’s more affordable smartwatch option, balancing essential features with value. It was released on September 16, 2022.
Key features
Design and Display: Available in 40mm and 44mm sizes with a Retina LTPO OLED display that can reach up to 1000 nits brightness. It has the same rectangular design as other Apple Watch models with a Digital Crown and side button. The back case is color-matched and produced with a process that reduces carbon emissions. It does not have an Always-On display.
Performance: Powered by the S8 SiP (System in Package) with a 64-bit dual-core processor and a 2-core Neural Engine. This chip provides faster performance compared to the first-generation Apple Watch SE.
Health and Wellness: Includes a second-generation optical heart sensor for heart rate monitoring, with notifications for high, low, and irregular heart rhythms. It tracks sleep stages and offers apps like Medications, Mindfulness, and Noise for wellness management.
Fitness Tracking: Features a variety of workout modes, customizable workout views, training load and heart rate zone tracking, and support for running, hiking, cycling, and swimming. It also detects various other workouts like skiing, yoga, Pilates, and dance.
Safety Features: Equipped with Emergency SOS, International Emergency Calling, Crash Detection, and Fall Detection. It can also track noise levels to help protect hearing.
Connectivity: Available in GPS only and GPS + Cellular models. Cellular models allow for calls, texts, and streaming without an iPhone nearby, according to Apple. Both models include GPS, Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 5.3, and Apple Pay. It also supports Family Setup, allowing users to set up and manage an Apple Watch for family members who don’t have their own iPhone.
Battery Life: Offers up to 18 hours of normal use on a single charge. It can be charged to 80% in about 1.5 hours.
Environmental Considerations: The Apple Watch SE is made with 100% recycled aluminum in the case and other recycled materials in various components. It can be carbon neutral when paired with specific bands.
